Virtual LAN usage tips

Local Area Network (VLAN) is a technology that divides a physical LAN into multiple logical networks, which can improve the security, flexibility, and performance of the network. Here are some tips for using VLANs:

1. Reasonably plan VLANs: Based on network requirements and business logic, plan the number and division of VLANs reasonably. For example, different departments or floors can be divided into different VLANs to achieve network isolation.

2. Using VLAN Trunk: With VLAN Trunk technology, data from multiple VLANs can be transmitted over a single physical link. This can reduce the need for physical wiring and save costs.

3. Utilize inter VLAN routing: If communication between different VLANs is required, routers or layer 3 switches can be used to implement inter VLAN routing.

4. Security strategy: VLAN can restrict access between different network segments and enhance network security. For example, access control lists (ACLs) can be set up to restrict traffic between different VLANs.

5. VLAN naming conventions: For ease of management and identification, it is recommended to use meaningful naming conventions to name VLANs, such as by department, geographic location, or function.

6. Monitoring and maintenance: Regularly check the configuration and performance of VLANs to ensure network stability and security. Network monitoring tools can be used to track the status and performance of VLANs.

7. Avoid over segmentation: Although VLANs can improve network isolation, over segmentation may lead to management complexity and performance degradation. We need to find a balance between isolation requirements and network efficiency.

8. Use VLAN extension features: Some advanced VLAN features, such as VLAN stacking and VLAN tunneling, can provide more flexible network design options.

9. Education and training: Ensure that network administrators understand the working principles and configuration methods of VLANs, so that they can correctly manage and maintain VLANs.

10. Document recording: Maintain detailed VLAN configuration documents, including VLAN partitioning, routing settings, and security policies, in order to quickly identify and resolve issues when needed.

Through these techniques, VLAN can be effectively utilized to optimize network structure, improve network security and performance.
